Authority... How?

What makes one authoritative? I just recently read a page on Copyblogger about building online authority for copy-writers and marketing/development "big-wigs", and the author was giving 10 essential tips to establish your own authority.

A brief synopsis is that you don't want to sell your self short. Be confident, be professional, and give people what the want, in a specific fashion, not being too general.

But one thing that really stuck out to me, is to make yourself so valuable that no one else can do what you do. You are the one to go to in your field.

For an example: Imagine I am a graphics designer that provides logos and advertisement material Christian ministries that want to convey their ministry's aim, motto, and mission all in a simple graphic. Well there are tons of graphics designers out there who can do just that.

However, I would be valuable because I deliver to a specific market: Christian ministries. I'm also unique because I am a Christian missionary myself, so I have first hand experience in reaching out to a dark world, which in reality is what these ministries are trying to accomplish, so my personal feeling and experience plays in the emotions needed to design such a piece of art.

Just something to think on.
